Podcasts
Podcasts are audio or video files that contain information, news, entertainment, sports, music, cultural and more. In this case, history! On my previous version of my website, I created a podcast page that included many of my favorites from the American Experience, Frontline World, POV and the Choices Program at Brown University.
Here, I wanted to provide links to some incredible podcast websites from other history teachers around the country as well as some interesting ideas for creating and using podcasts in my own classroom.
SPEAKING OF HISTORY: This podcast website is written, produced and directed by one of the nation’s most recognized history teachers, Eric Langhorst from Missouri. It is updated almost everyday and contains useful information for teachers and students. It is an example of almost everything innovative about technology use in the classroom.
AP US HISTORY PODCASTS: This website is also available on iTunes and is created an updated by Mr. Shocket. His lectures are reviews of the textbook his AP US History class uses (America, Past and Present by Robert Divine). They are direct and are great for students to use as review tools.
PRI’S ‘THE WORLD’ – TECHNOLOGY PODCAST (requires iTunes): Clark Boyd, the host of this really cool podcast, interviews (local) history teacher, Gregory Kulowiec, at Plymouth South High School in Massachusetts about how he integrates technology use in the classroom. It’s definitely worth a listen.
Here are some other useful websites for teachers concerning podcast creation and use in the classroom:
- USING PODCASTS IN THE CLASSROOM: Basics, with links provided to sample podcast sites as well as links to sites that provide information and tips about creating your own podcasts.
- INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM: Complex, with a detailed essay (with links) on why podcasts can be useful classroom tools, how they can be created, and how they can enhance lessons with digital storytelling to a worldwide audience.
- PODCASTS IN THE CLASSROOM: Usable, with sections for teachers and students as well as resource links.
- DISCOVERY SCHOOL DIGITAL GADGETS: Kathy Schrock’s website concerning classroom resources on podcasts, digital cameras and other tech gadgets.
- USING PODCASTS IN THE CLASSROOM: This is a PDF document created by Jason Brazier from the Minnesota Literacy Council and is a very detailed step-by-step guide for teachers.
